Hey you guys.....you guys....i think that you use too many effects. Like...look at our band...we suck, but at least its actually us and not some stupid recording studio or FX making us sound that way so....yeah..you guys are like Linkin Park...whom i don't enjoy to hear in my ears very much. Except you guys are slightly better than linkin park.

Thanks for the constructive feedback, Josher. We're definitely realists here, so while we feel we have certain strengths and weaknesses that we're always working to improve upon, we know that, overall, at the end of the day, we really do suck. If you could learn how to play Severance and Alone for us and then teach us how to do them "less sucky", we'd really appreciate it. We'll even pay you for your time! Thanks again! ~ Kenton

You know, Holden, that is still my favorite song... it's the oldest of anything on this album, by far, but it's just got a vibe about it...very organic sounding compared to something like With You or The Paradigm. We're actually working really hard right now to prepare the full onslaught with the toms and taikos on stage. I don't know what we can afford to bring with us for only a 30 minute and 20 minute set (respectively), but wer'e going to give it a go!

Well, "fallingdown", I won't pretend for a second that I believe we don't have a number of fans who exploited the voting loophole on this site. If the opportunity is there, people are going to use it, and I'm sure every band on here had a little help in that respect. In the end, if everyone's fans are doing it, it's still the band with the most fans who wins, wouldn't you agree? ......................... THAT SAID... some basic math reveals an incredible lack of faith on your part in your chances of success in this industry. 6400 votes divided by 8 days of voting equals 800 dedicated fans. Now, we could sit and debate the validity of those votes, or the several thousand that anyone else got, until the cows come home without resolving the issue. Regadless, the fact is, 800 dedicated fans is NOT a lot. I don't remember you mentioning yet which band you're in, but I hope your bandmates have more faith in themselves than you do, because if all of you believe that no matter "how big your band is...no one can get that many votes", you've got a few long years of disappointment ahead of you! Wow... I can't even imagine, before my career is even off the ground, capping my success as an independent artist at less than 800 fans and assuming that anything more than that is impossible. You must not have much respect for the music you create! Which is odd, because you speak as though you were an expert on the subject of how to define and create original and "non-commercial" music. Surely you'd like an opportunity to show us how it's done? Where can we hear your original tunes? (I'm not really expecting an honest answer, if one at all, so don't sweat it). ~ Kenton

I read somewhere that true are makes people feel something. It's an interesting definition and whether it's true or not is part of what makes art art. Point being: Your music, and ours lately, is getting both positive and negative reactions from people. To me that says that at least people are reacting. That must mean it's art. Now, whether it's good art or not is completely subjective. All I know is, it's better than no reaction! I can't tell you how many of our friends and fans have commented on how good you guys are. And once again, I can't say it enough, thanks for the support in this contest. I still can't believe we made it in. We owe you! We're stoked for the 2nd. See you at the Launch party. Hey Hellfire. First off, THANK YOU for opening up what could be a great, intelligent discussion. I can definitely say that money is the LAST thing we're in it for. I find it ironic that someone would compare us to bands that, for us, represent an excellent template for what NOT to do. Any accusation of "selling out", whatever that actually means, is more than preposterous. On an aside note, "selling out" is typically a term used by people who don't have a f**king clue about what it means to be an artist. I'm not sure if you were agreeing that we sound like Nickelback... or Ashlee Simpson, but in my opinion that couldn't be further from the truth. Chad Kroeger is on record stating that he writes music he thinks will be popular, and will make a lot of money, much like your guitarist friend. That's what he does, and it's been very successful for him, so more power to him. It's not a philosophy I personally prescribe to, but calling him a "sell out" is a little ignorant. I'm not sure how anyone could accuse us, a band that writes 10 min songs, with no regard for the popular music format, of trying to write music just for money. First and foremost... WHAT MONEY!? I don't think our music is generic at all. It's not entirely unique, we are writing rock music after all. However, it's certainly a far cry from the Nickelbacks and the Creeds of the world, but hell, that's just my opinion. If you're of the opinion that because we have a baritone vocalist, and guitars in our music, that makes us sound like Nickelback... well, what can I say. You might be ignoring, or un-aware of the complicated arrangements, rhythm patterns, and melodies that to my ears make us an entirely different entity. We take our music and our writing very seriously. We work very hard to challenge ourselves with respect to writing and playing. It's easy to dismiss all that work and energy with a quick "You suck!", which is why it's probably better to just ignore what people say, and make sure your art speaks to you. Whether that means you want to write music that people want to hear a million times over and over on the radio, or if you just want to challenge yourself artistically it's up to you. I can definitely state that we're in the context of the latter. If you don't hear it that way... well that's just your opinion, and I probably don't give a f**k. As for talent not being relevent anymore... absolute bulls**t. Does it take more than just talent, and in some cases un-music related talent? Sometimes yes, when your idea of success is money and fame, yeah. But this has ALWAYS been true. Is Ashlee Simpson talented? Without a doubt. Do I listen to her music? No, enough said, end of story. Does she deserve her success? It's a moot point, who cares; it's not worth my time to debate about it. Slagging other artists, and punching holes in their credibility doesn't do anything to advance my art... and that's all that matters to me. .kevin. - Portal

Hey Bobby, you've got a keen eye there, but not keen enough, apparently. You've missed the fact that a LOT of bands' vote totals keep climbing, and have shed some light on why our plan of attack worked. While the voting PAGE may have been taken down early today, the ability to vote was still there all through the day on Tuesday, and may still be today. You see, clicking on the "VOTE FOR" button simply takes you to a link which places the vote for that band, a link which we plastered all over our site in a variety of different places and capacities. While the voting page may have been taken down, the link still works (or worked all day Tuesday), so anyone who visited PORTALBAND.COM and clicked on the "VOTE FOR" link there was still able to vote. One more weakness of the process, I suppose, but one we were able to exploit better than some in the end! Don't believe me? Try it! Sign into the Sound Radio site, and then go to http://www.portalband.com/news.html and click on the word "HERE" next to the Molson Rock Search logo. And thanks in advance for the vote! Or, better yet, just type http://www.thesoundradio.com/vote.do?artistNo=198 into your browser's address bar and press enter! Yep, I just tried it...still working at 12:56 A.M. on Wednesday! It's too bad you didn't know about it...there's still bands climbing the charts as we speak!

Hey Kenton - Not sure if you remember me, but its Nathan, formerly of the Casanova Playboys - I helped organize the Edmonton Rocks Against Cancer show/compilation last year. Hey there, "money". Sorry it's taken us so long to get back to you. It's been a busy couple of days. We've been writing thank-you notes like mad to people who've joined our fanlist this week. It seems everyone's really enjoying the new tracks and are very excited about the new CD! We've also been busy in the studio remixing a song from our first CD, "Shallow", because it's being included in a soundtrack along with "Remnants" in an upcoming film. And, of course, we're hard at work practising! I only wish I had more time to kick back and relax in front of my computer writing anonymous hate mail to people I don't know. That'd be a great use of my time. I envy you and your easy life! But, then again, success has always meant a little more to me than a lot of people, so I guess I'll keep plugging away... ANYWAYS... thanks for the constructive feedback! In every handful of good reviews there's always a bad one, but you learn to roll with the punches! It doesn't matter what you do, there's always someone who doesn't like it. I'm not half the NKOTB fan you are for example, and, similarly, I'd understand completely if Nine Inch Nails was too abstract or intellectual for you. My five year old cousin likes Raffi over Finger Eleven, my Grandma can't listen to Soundgarden (too loud), and you don't like Portal. I can respect that completely! Nevertheless, rest assured, we are taking your valuable advice to heart (and thank-you again for taking the time to offer it)! Just this morning, in fact, I suggested to the guys, "Hey...why don't we try being less boring. Everything else sounds great, but let's bring the boring down a notch or two and see how it sounds." I don't want to change too much, because then all of our fans who obviously LIKE boring music will feel alienated and alone, but we're trying to find that happy medium, because your patronage would mean the world to us! LASTLY, I thought I'd return your favour with a little constructive offering of my own. While I do empathize with the frustration you feel at the fact your or your friends' band is having a tough time keeping up with the Chyshugas, Rakes, and Pindolls of the Alberta scene, you might do better to spend your time and energy being positive towards them instead of negative towards others. Your musical tastes and talent are obvious by your love of NKOTB and your uncanny ability to separate "boring" music from "less-than-boring" or "somewhat boring" music. If you could somehow use that to your or your friends' advantage and help them gain some more fans, perhaps in a couple of years time they will be able to keep up too! Until then, thanks again for your help! You shouldn't be afraid to share your talents with the world. Let everyone know who you are!

I'm glad to see you guys are in this for the same reasons we are. Thanks for the comments and I look forward to seeing you guys play. Fantastic tunes!

Really like the tunes! Saw your band live years ago at the Urban, was impressed. Snitch actually has a band page on thesoundradio called; sound snitch, check it out and show some support to this fine ambassador of our local indie scene!

this Snitch character sounds like someone who made frequent posts on the old Portal website forum , Erotic_Storm.
Could it be her?

I'm so glad our fans have better things to do than tell other bands they "suck". You're welcome, Holden! I hope it helps 'cause you guys are great! ~ Kenton

Guys, this is Holden from My Sister Ocean. Wow. I am floored. Thanks for the support and I think this shows everyone how cool you guys are. You didn't have to do anything, but you mentioned us and already we've had some votes thanks to your fans. Eugenio and myself are truly thankful. This is what the scene should be all about. It'd be great to share the stage with you whether it's at the Rock Search or just a show anytime soon. You guys definitely deserve some kutos for your new album and great work getting votes for this thing. Cheers. MSO

Hey guys, dig your sound! Have the first disc. Whatever happend to Blair? We played drums together many years ago. Keep up the killer tunes. Creative marketing with the guitar giveaway! Ignore the pissy-pants comments from people choked they never thought of it first.

So, first you steal Tool's Music, then by cheating, you and the rest of these bands at the top of the list steal the chance for a good band to make it. Seriously, thats not cool, it's people like you and almost everyone else in this competition that makes the Edmoton scene suck.

Thanks for the kind words, Ryan! Yeah, that track turned out better even better than I could have hoped. A solid performance was the key from the beginning, and why we chose to use that one, but four months of solid work didn't hurt either! Mike Tulley engineered the recording for us, and I mixed it here in the studio myself, with some input from the band. Kevin mastered the whole album. In the end, about 99% of the work that went into the album was our own, and we couldn't be happier with how it turned out. It bodes well for how our new material will come across when we start working on a brand new CD of originals in the fall. ~ Kenton

Hey guys, great sounding s**t. Who the hell engineered your live stuff and where was it mixed? it sounds deadly. I'm not sure which one in Kenton... but I'll agree he is sexy. Let's do some shows in the near future. Ryan-Chyshuga

Hey ross, we always play a full band set, loud and hard hitting, we mix in a few acoustic songs for fun though. We only recorded the acoustic songs to have something until we are finished the recording...keep rockin...MIKE (the night life)

It shouldn't take a stroke of genius to figure that one out. The fact that you didn't have to confirm your e-mail address when you first signed up on this site should have been a good clue...for most people, anyway. Thanks for visiting our site, though! http://www.portalband.com if anyone else is interested. You could win a free guitar if you join our mailing list!

I don't know if I'd call it interesting. His name's Mike Dilts. He books all the bands at Red's. Anybody who's ever played there (which is probably most of the bands on this site) would know him. If you keep practising, maybe you could meet him one day too! : )

So far so good with the votes. If you guys should be the ones to snag the 6 figure cash prize, it would be an invaluable asset in distributing your music to the masses. The world needs more meaningful music anyway.

Word has it "Snitch" is an associate of TheSoundRadio who posted that on almost everyone's page without permission from the company. TheSoundRadio removed them all, to the best of my knowledge.

Sure, we could leave it alone... I don't think we care all that much. You've probably noticed we haven't deleted any posts, so we're obviously not worried about them. As you can see, though, every time I post something, two or three more people come to say something dumb, which counts as page hits, and ups our site stats. It's all about the promotions, my friend. I could care less about anything else right now! ; )

I am not sure if you guys are the best band in this event? However, I will say that you will be getting my vote when you play live. Your ability to defend yourselves from an on slot of fiery comments is to be congratulated. Keep up the good work.
